Water Pasteurization Indicator

Quote:

A Water Pasteurization Indicator (WAPI) is a simple thermometer that indicates when water has reached pasteurization temperature and is safe to drink. Pasteurization destroys all microorganisms that cause diseases from drinking contaminated water and milk. A small polycarbonate tube contains a wax that melts when water or milk is heated enough to be pasteurized (65˚C/149˚F). This saves much fuel by eliminating the need to boil water or milk to ensure that the pasteurization temperature has been reached.

I have one of these too. It's a little capsule on a string that you hang into a quart jar (for instance) that you've painted black and put into a Solar Oven (for instance) to pasteurize water with solar power. When the wax melts and falls to the bottom of the tube, the water has been pasteurized. It does not remove dangerous chemicals, however. A very inexpensive solution to a problem. Let the water settle, if you have no filter, and then use the power of sunlight to make it safer.
